Census Dates
Each course has a census date. If you are enrolled in a course once the course census date passes, you will remain liable for the full tuition and associated fees for that course.
The following standard census dates apply at ANU:
- First Semester Census Date is 5 April
- Second Semester Census Date is 31 August
Each course in a non-standard session has its own individual census date. Please look up course code on ANU Program and Courses to find the census date for that course. More information on census dates can be found here.
Step 4: Textbooks
For your LAWS-coded courses, you can find the required textbooks by visiting the ANU Law School Course Search Website. Simply search by course code or course name, and the required textbooks will be listed under Textbook and reading requirements.
The textbooks for your semester are listed below.
Required Text:
- Hamer et al, Laying Down the Law (LexisNexis Butterworths, 12th ed, 2024). You must purchase this text and it must be the 12th edition. Do not purchase an earlier edition.
Recommended Resources:
- Students are strongly encouraged to also obtain a legal dictionary. One such dictionary is the: Concise Australian Legal Dictionary (Lexis Nexis Butterworths). Some booksellers (such as Harry Hartog - on campus) offer the Lexis Nexis Butterworths legal dictionary sold in a discounted bundle with the required text. While you must have the most recent edition of the textbook (see above), the same is not true for the legal dictionary. A second hand copy, or an earlier edition, of any legal dictionary is certainly adequate.
- Students are strongly recommended to purchase a copy of the Australian Guide to Legal Citation (4th edition) published by the Universitiy of Melbourne and available on Zookal for a modest price. A free online version is also available. However, the online version is not as convenient or as easy to use as a hard copy. (You need the 4th edition. Any earlier edition of AGLC is not suitable).
LAWS6103 Torts
Required Text:
- Harold Luntz et al, Luntz & Hambly's Torts: Cases, Legislation and Commentary (Lexis Nexis, 9th ed, 2021)
Recommended Resources:
- M Davies et al, Focus: Torts (10th ed, Chatswood, LexisNexis, 2023)
- A Stickley, Australian Torts Law (4th ed, Chatswood, LexisNexis, 2016)
- J Kyriakakis et al Contemporary Australian Tort Law (Cambridge University Press, 2nd ed, 2024)
LAWS6104 Contracts
Required Text:
- Robertson, Andrew and Jeannie Paterson, Contract: Cases and Materials, (Thomson Reuters, 14th ed, 2020).
Required Legislation:
- Australian Consumer Law.
Recommended Resources:
- Robertson, Andrew and Jeannie Paterson, Principles of Contract Law, (Thomson Reuters, 6th ed, 2020).
